Jango Pramartha

Bali, Indonesia

Cartoonist who is both persistent and consistent in voicing various social, cultural, political and environmental comments and criticisms. Jango’s works have been widely published in various media, either local, national or international. Jango’s criticism in his cartoons is admittedly filled with humour, but in fact it is also laced with a good deal of criticism and satire. Unlike most other cartoon works, Jango wants to bring the rapidly changing issues of Bali into his way of thinking as a Balinese person observing Bali, so to speak ‘from the inside’. Jango’s approach interesting in that when he offers ideas in the form of criticism. In fact he is also conveying insights into issues, norms, and values that are based on the noble traditions of his culture, namely Balinese culture. Therefore, Jango’s cartoon works play an important role in shaping perceptions, not just via imagery, but with deliberate reference to the meaning of Bali which is constantly changing in terms of cultural identity.

Bali has changed very quickly and has seen much decline in quality in various aspects, including changes in the behavior and lifestyle of its people who are becoming increasingly attached to a modern style. It is hoped that the humorous criticism conveyed by Jango will encourage readers to seek and empathise with his experience of seeing the changes in Bali ‘up close’.

Jango attempts to unravel the problems of Bali by posturing himself as a Balinese person, meaning that he is dealing directly with the Balinese people as both the subject and object of the problem. Not infrequently, Jango’s cartoons also harshly criticise Balinese people, in addition to local government policies, or various violations of policy, or lifestyles that push the Balinese people’s foothold beyond traditional and towards modern. When he analyses Bali and Globalization, he clearly, coherently, and, I would argue effortlessly, conveys its reflection in his Glo-Bali-Zation series.
